Some People Think This Sign Is Too Complex

Drivers in White Lake, Michigan have complained that a sign in front of Lakewood Elementary School is too complicated. But there's a legal reason why the sign has to this specific:

Bogie Lake Road is home to Lakeland High School, White Lake Middle School and Lakewood Elementary. The school district says the signs are for safety purposes, but it still begs the question: Why the need for six separate time zones?

"We have three different schools, all of which have three different start times and end times,” said Kim Root, communications director with Huron Valley School District. "The law states you have to display the times in their specific windows, you can’t block it off and make it this big chunk of time."

Jonas you got it. There are all sorts of reasons why there may be kids crossing the street to and from school outside those hours. You have neatly pointed out that legislators are idiots.

There is absolutely no need to make the speed limit so specific - it only makes things more dangerous. It also doesn't take into account other factors, like after-school activities or special events.

It would make much more sense to simply have a fixed, reduced speed limit around the school and a regular speed limit further away; especially in the US where litigation is so common, as anyone speeding will just argue that the sign is too complicated.

In my home district, the speed limit through school zones is -5 mph, which means you have to drive your car backwards. And we've had no fatalities for over 16 straight months.

Hershey, PA has a road like that. Amazingly though somebody there did something smart, the speed limit goes from 35 to 25 when you get closer to the school zone, then they have the flashing lights for the times the limit is 15.

Haha! They forgot to include the school year calendar! How are silly childless motorists supposed to know which days are "school days" and which days are in-service or half days or spring break or christmas break?? Haha.

its a road hazard that's for sure. We have 2 for each school zone and I have difficult time reading ESPECIALLY when they're not rounded to the nearest 5 minutes.

Here's a thought, fix the law. Or just ask for a court waiver under the circumstances. People waste too much money and time on issues "because they have to", when really they don't. If the system can't work out something this simple, the system is broken.

Some school signs in Florida use a flashing yellow light, or there is a crossing guard next to the sign when children are present. Makes more sense. If I had to read my watch to figure out to slow down or not, I might hit a student.
