The plants of the genus Platycerium are more commonly known as Staghorn or Elkhorn ferns. They grow on trees, but are not parasites, because they generate their own nutrition from water and sunlight. However, they grow on other trees, and produces two types of fern fronds -one to catch sunlight, the other to surround its roots, hold water, and connect the plant to the tree.
