Glass Steam Engine

(YouTube link)

In 2008, Czech master glassblower Michal ZahradnĂk built a steam engine entirely out of glass! There are no seals here, just snug-fitting glass. This is a replica of an early locomotive steam engine designed by George and/or Robert Stephenson. If you're anything like me, you will watch this entire video waiting for something to blow up or break (which happened often, according to the video description). -via the Presurfer

Very cool. I really think it needs some sort of lubricant though, both to reduce friction-induced wear on the glass parts and to create an airtight seal between the glass parts. The airtight seal would increase the efficiency.

Why is it a model of Stephenson's steam engine? Stephenson used pretty standard steam engines, others invented and refined the engine. Stephenson's great contrubutions were getting the flanged wheel locomotive to work and building railways, in particular it was Stephenson who realised that railways would not work with significant inclines. Hence his being known as the father of the railways.

He certainly was not responsible for the steam engine.
