Sharyn, use a soft wood. Prolly pine I should think. I think my brother in law might get one of these for Christmas.

drive the nail into a tree and then let the tree grow for x amount of time until the nail is absorbed into it. then cut the piece of wood with the nail in it out and shape your sculpture.

I thought this would be an optical illusion of some sort & I was really surprised with how it was done. I'd love to try it myself, but I'd probably loose a finger or two just cutting the slots in the wood.

Just out of interest... does anyone know whether you can do it with any type of wood, or is it only a specific type?
