It's nice as an art piece, but definitely not as a fish living space. Poor things don't have enough room in a normal fish bowl, let alone one with mountains.
I really hate when they use goldfish as examples in small fish bowls like this. Goldfish can grow up to 6 inches long and live for twenty years when in pongs, they should not live in bowls!
The only kind of fish that can go in here is a betta fish.
I'm sorry for ranting, but I used to work at a petstore and had to argue with people hourly about why they can't buy a goldfish in a bowl.
We have two 25cm Tiger Oscars in a 500L freshwater tank, and the 12 or so goldfish we put in their tank every other week really seem to like the room, swimming from end to end, nibbling on the live plants, exploring the rocks and caves.
Of course it's only for a minute or so, then the Oscars eat them.
Even bettas should go in something larger than this. It's pretty tricky to heat a bowl this small properly, and yes, bettas need heated water, they are tropical fish.
WOO, I'm glad there are others out there who realize fish bowls should NOT be used for fish. And no, not even bettas. ALL fish need a filtered environment IMO (well unless they're in a natural one of course heh). Ammonia can build up super quickly even if it is just a small fish and that= a dead fish.
Vonskippy, you keep your oscars w/ live plants? I've always heard that they are very destructive fish b/c they like rearranging everything in their tank :P
@Lisal - yup, Oscars are busy little aqua engineers (and they like to have their nose petted when someone walks by their tank).
The trick with keeping live plants is to have a rock infrastructure that makes getting to the base of the plant to small for the Oscars to get to (i.e. nooks and crannies made up of large heavy rocks).
Plus keep enough smaller rocks and "toys" in the tank so the Oscars have other things to keep themselves amused (like chasing live food).
Goldfish especially on the ammonia, they are little ammonia machines. Bettas aren't so bad, so they do ok with regular water changes. But as always, you should always try to give ANY fish you have the best environment you can, and filtration is always better than changing the water.
