Glass Beach is a section of coastline in MacKerricher State Park in California. After World War II, it was used as a public dump for two decades until local officials halted the practice. Since that time, the waves have worn smooth the glass shards disposed on the shore. However sad is the original cause, the result is quite pretty. You can view several more pictures at the link. Great photos, but the site was a little annoying. It had an overlay that remained stationary when I scrolled down the page. I couldn't find a way to close it, but that sort of thing always concerns me. Too many pop-ups start out that way.

Awww, my heart is in Fort Bragg. I love Glass Beach, the bike ride to MacKerricher and back, Cowlick's ice cream shop for Mushroom ice cream (tastes like maple, yum!) and Triangle Tattoo Museum for it's odd and beautiful collection.

I used to have a backyard that was used as a dump waaay back when. Every spring when the garden was tilled, we spent days picking up a new "crop" of broken glass. Too bad those sharp edges were not dulled by crashing waves.

IMO the glass at this beach was smooth enough to walk around barefooted. I kept watching for broken pieces but didn't really see any shards. And there were TONS of families with kids there... :D
