The first arrow is hollow. Pretty obvious as the impact occurs. The Mythbusters used solid arrows. It is a nice trick shot, though.

If only he used an English longbow instead of a multi thousand dollar composite with every attachment possible bolted on.

Right, but the mythbusters were looking at splitting the arrow. They busted it because they couldn't get an exact split. The arrow would always deflect. Using a hollow arrow is cool, but not the same.

Maybe this was his hundredth try?

This is damn impressive.

I think it is pretty obvious that it was intended to be a trick shot - a very difficult one, that nevertheless took extraordinary skill. It also doesn't threaten the credibility of Adam, Jamie, and the gang since the point wasn't to split a wooden arrow shaft but really to be a demonstration and impress viewership.

On a side note, archery is serious business in Korea, with the dominance of the Korean archery team (particularly the women's team) at the Olympic games as the most salient example.

I've seen someone do this exact same thing at about 20 yards.

if there aren't lots of people who can do exactly the same thing, that's good enough for me to say WOW! kudos to that Korean dude.

My mythbusters had it right, your comparing something completely different here. The tube is completely open (nothing capping it) on this target arrow ... and its a tube.

What you should be investigating is this guy versus the mythbusters ...

This old fan of field archery is impressed. Looks like something Howard Hill would have easily mastered back in the day.

Splitting an arrow with wood shafts is going to be extremely difficult because of the difficulty in getting a shaft with wood grain that is uniformly parallel to the shaft. Modern aluminum or fiberglass tubular shafts would make it much easier, as would bamboo shafts, which are already tubular in nature. Regardless of the shaft construction, though, the nock, which has to be sturdy enough to take the stress of shooting the arrow, would have to split cleanly in order that the second arrow not deflect -- you will note in the video that the arrow in the target has no visible nock; it is not clear whether it was shot without a proper nock so that the hollow center of the shaft remained unobstructed, or whether the nock on the first arrow was removed after it hit the target.
