Saudi Arabia's proposed Kingdom Tower will rise to 5,280 feet. That's a full mile. If completed, this building in Jeddah will cost $30 billion to build and will contain apartments, hotel rooms, and offices in its 12 million cubic feet of space. The above graphic compares the structure to the Petronis Tower (center) in Malaysia and the Empire State Building (left) in the US. Currently, the tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa, which is 2,700 feet tall.

Perhaps they left it out because it made the infographic less striking. Fail.
I have two words for the builders: Sand storms.
The Empire state building will always be the tallest building in the world, regardless of the facts.
1. The Daily needs to check its spellings before putting these things out there. It is the Petronas Towers not Petronis Towers.
2. The Arabs are in a pissing competition at the moment. One guy gets a tall building, another one gets a tall(er) building. Ditto massive yacht, ditto posh hotel, ditto ad nauseam.
3. I doubt this will be built. It's a pipe dream and a statement to the rebels of how big and strong the House of Saud is. There are too many massive issues to overcome to build it - geology is the main one. Not even the Saudis can chance the fundamental geology of the planet.
4. To the troll who said fly a plane into it - you're a sick puppy...
re: This country got away with funding and manning the 9/11
Which country do you live in?
I hope they make it only to have it fall in on it's self and put an end to all of human kind's pissing competitions
"you can be a king or a street sweeper sooner or later we all dance with the grim reaper"
Is this obsession with towers some sort of Middle Eastern thing? The terrorists were really determined to bring down the WTC. It's interesting how it seems to be driven so much by symbolism.
It may not be a pissing competition between humans. If such a structure were built at home we'd be apt to say it was part of a "human" aspiration to achieve new heights. The key point is actually human pride over and against nature (a.k.a. God)
Just wait until the Chinese decide they want to play. They'll make everything that's gone before look like a garden shed.
Face it guys. The game's moved on and you're not players anymore.
You don't really understand Americans do you?
Every time the government spends a dime that isn't on the military or welfare the general public explodes into a rage.
And if a private company were to build it, it would take 50 years of pre-planning to get the proper permits, take 10x longer to build with unionized labor instead of cheep slaves from india, and cost 20x as much as the Arabs will spend on it, just because thats how we roll.
A building of this scale is not designed for longevity, safety, or practicality. Is there an actual need for it? It makes money for architects and designers, money for contractors and construction companies, but no money for the owners, who really don't mind since its sole purpose is bragging rights and ego stroking. (Unless, I suppose, the owners also own the construction companies. Then the money just goes from one account to another)
Saudi Arabia have been and will always be US friendly.
Qaeda attacked the US, and Guess who is the one who funded them. The one who funded the Qaeda is the US it's self.
Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_war_in_Afghanistan
You guies trained them, funded them. Not Us.
And anybody who wants to see misery fall upon other bunches of people who have literally nothing to do with governmental disputes is a douche. Freaking seriously.
and this project will finish ( by allah well ) in 2016 costing the AL-Saud Family 1 billion Dollar Starter
