Saudi Arabia Plans to Build Mile-High Building

Saudi Arabia's proposed Kingdom Tower will rise to 5,280 feet. That's a full mile. If completed, this building in Jeddah will cost $30 billion to build and will contain apartments, hotel rooms, and offices in its 12 million cubic feet of space. The above graphic compares the structure to the Petronis Tower (center) in Malaysia and the Empire State Building (left) in the US. Currently, the tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa, which is 2,700 feet tall.

Why not show the Burj Khalifa on this? Seems like an obvious omission.

Perhaps they left it out because it made the infographic less striking. Fail.

Is it horrible that some small part of me wants to see someone fly a plane into one of their buildings? This country got away with funding and manning the 9/11 attacks, sorry to be a downer. Mile high buildings are really cool.

This must be a P.R. stunt to underline the power of the royal family to the rebels. No way in hell can they build this white elephant. The Burj is less than half as tall and the top 1/3 of it is empty storage rooms because they can't pump water up that high!

I have two words for the builders: Sand storms.

A couple of things.

1. The Daily needs to check its spellings before putting these things out there. It is the Petronas Towers not Petronis Towers.

2. The Arabs are in a pissing competition at the moment. One guy gets a tall building, another one gets a tall(er) building. Ditto massive yacht, ditto posh hotel, ditto ad nauseam.

3. I doubt this will be built. It's a pipe dream and a statement to the rebels of how big and strong the House of Saud is. There are too many massive issues to overcome to build it - geology is the main one. Not even the Saudis can chance the fundamental geology of the planet.

4. To the troll who said fly a plane into it - you're a sick puppy...

9/11 aside and the funding thar of ......

I hope they make it only to have it fall in on it's self and put an end to all of human kind's pissing competitions

It's not the Titanic we should be worried about. It's The Towering Inferno. Or worse yet, Die Hard.

Is this obsession with towers some sort of Middle Eastern thing? The terrorists were really determined to bring down the WTC. It's interesting how it seems to be driven so much by symbolism.

So I would want to be there the first time somebody that lives on one of the upper floors forgets somethings and just realizes it when they get to the lobby.

The Tower of Babel reference is coming. The old fable illustrates a key principle. No matter how good we think we are, some natural (A.k.a. Godly) event will chop us down and all our towers.

It may not be a pissing competition between humans. If such a structure were built at home we'd be apt to say it was part of a "human" aspiration to achieve new heights. The key point is actually human pride over and against nature (a.k.a. God)

If the same tower were being built in the USA, people who commented here would be singing praises about it. Even write poems or talk about how awesome their country is. But, when a Middle East country or when a third world country is doing something different, they start barking like dogs. I remember reading an article in an old newspaper about how the New Yorkers were surpassing The Great Pyramid of Giza, Chrysler Building, and other buildings. There was hell lot of information about how the exterior and interiors were besides the other info about the builders and the praises from the Civil Engineers Society. But, this 5280 feet building is against nature. DIE SATAN!! Right Yankees?

It's kind of funny reading all the comments on here that obviously come from the septics. You were perfectly happy to play in your own pissing contests when the tallest buildings were all in the states. Now you don't have the tallest building any more and don't have the money to join the game it's suddenly a bad idea.

Just wait until the Chinese decide they want to play. They'll make everything that's gone before look like a garden shed.

Face it guys. The game's moved on and you're not players anymore.

@ Kan

You don't really understand Americans do you?

Every time the government spends a dime that isn't on the military or welfare the general public explodes into a rage.

And if a private company were to build it, it would take 50 years of pre-planning to get the proper permits, take 10x longer to build with unionized labor instead of cheep slaves from india, and cost 20x as much as the Arabs will spend on it, just because thats how we roll.

I don't think this building would be designed in the USA, because it's simply not practical or profitable.

A building of this scale is not designed for longevity, safety, or practicality. Is there an actual need for it? It makes money for architects and designers, money for contractors and construction companies, but no money for the owners, who really don't mind since its sole purpose is bragging rights and ego stroking. (Unless, I suppose, the owners also own the construction companies. Then the money just goes from one account to another)

@R2K
Saudi Arabia have been and will always be US friendly.
Qaeda attacked the US, and Guess who is the one who funded them. The one who funded the Qaeda is the US it's self.

You guies trained them, funded them. Not Us.

Look, man. Not all of us run around in Hummers. I think the building is dumb as he'll regardless of whatever country it wants to be in.

And anybody who wants to see misery fall upon other bunches of people who have literally nothing to do with governmental disputes is a douche. Freaking seriously.

I'd feel exactly the same way about this if it was built in Canada (my home), or anywhere else. It's human pride, whether it is over and against other nations or nature itself. It is not practical, it is dangerous and likely just comes from the machoism "Bigger is Better". All this kind of thing makes me sick to the heart when I think about how petty and superficial the motives are and how real and painful the consequences can be.
