Soap Flakes

Nathalie Stämpfli designed this soap dispenser. It takes a solid bar and grates shavings into your hand. It's like a gourmet Parmesan cheese grater, but with soap! Stämpfli writes:

Today, most of the soap we use is liquid soap, which contains a lot of water. Block soap instead is more concentrated and therefore has some ecological benefits: You don’t transport unnecessary water around. In place of plastic bottles you can simply use paper for packaging. The solid blocks can easily be piled and allow a greater space efficiency in a truck.

But what about the usage of soap bars? I don’t like the weird slippery feeling when I use them. It gives me goose bumps. And under the shower, it always slides out of your fingers. Hand soap also often gets dirty and accumulates bacteria when more than one person is using it.

I remember something similar to this in the old Albuquerque airport restrooms. This was before liquid soap. I do not know though if the soap was already shaved or if it came out like that when you pushed the bar. ??

They used to have these in Canadian K-Marts about 30 years ago. The soap bar (usually LUX) was inside a white opaque container and you would hold your hand under and turn a black flywheel which would shave the bar and drop the flakes out the bottom. Haven' seen one since back then. Come to think of it, we haven't had K-Mart in Canada for 15+ years!

1. I found this idea terribly interesting and I think that this solution is really good. It is saving not only water but also money, because such a soap dispenser isn't quite expensive. Apart from that this device is quite original, creative and modern so due to that it would certainly arouse interest amongst acquaintances which would visit me. Apart from that I think that it is easy to use, even for children.
