Sputnik 2010 Geocache

(YouTube link)

Geocaching is a hobby that's really "caching" on! Neatoramanaut E6C and his team launched a balloon from North Carolina last Saturday.

After reaching the max altitude of 101,001 feet up, the balloon burst and Sputnik 2010 drifted back down to earth and landed at Plymouth, NC nearly 124 miles away from the launch site and became the first East Coast Geocache into space AND back and is available for logging right where it landed.

Very cool! I've been geocaching for about 9 years now. Love the game...great idea for a cache! Would love to claim a find on this one sometime.

Geocaching has a problem these days. Hiding an ammo box someplace creative is a good way to be arrested or worse. Times have changed since GC became a hobby.

This happens every time. 100,000 feet is NOT space. Space is defined as around 100 KM, or about 60 miles. That is more like 300,000 feet.
