People who bag groceries for a living have to work quickly and efficiently without breaking anything. Not everyone is good enough to make it as a bagger, but some are superb at the task. That must be a regional requirement - certainly doesn't apply to where we live.
I'm pretty sure CityMarket requires all of their checkers/baggers to be obnoxiously slow and spatially challenged. Bonus points if they're unable to tell expensive and/or fragile items from common rocks.
That's pretty good set of requirements for almost any job. Except maybe omelette maker.
It does remind me of when I and my fellow overqualified Pizza Hut workers held pizza box folding competitions. Yeah, it was fierce!
