Man Needed House in Expensive Beijing, So He Built One

Daihai Fei graduated from college six months ago and needed a place to live in Beijing. But the rental properties available were so expensive that he decided to build his own house. It's shaped like an egg and made from burlap bags, bamboo, insulation, and paint. Fei built a solar panel into the roof. The total cost was 6400 yuan or $960 USD. You can view several more pictures at the link, which appears to be in Italian.

when I see things like this I'm always perplexed about where they put the house. Somebody own the land/parking spot/rooftop. Are they renting the space to put the house? Or did they just pick a spot and the property owners haven't quite worked out how to tell them to leave?

Who would want to live like that. You're squatting on somebodies land, in a tiny hut, with no toilet or shower or kitchen. Homeless people the world over have done that for ages - why is this guy news-worthy?
