The common coffeemaker is a simple but brilliant piece of technology. How does it work? Bill Hammack, who explains engineering principles in a way that laypeople can understand them, tells us in this video. The coffeemaker is able to heat both water and brewed coffee with with only one heating element using a bubble pump. If I understand Hammack correctly, it has only one moving part.

My peculator doesn't even have that ball bubble pump thing. Just a tube down the middle.

Actually, a percolator works under the same principle of having a bubble pump or one-way valve in combination with a heating element. The difference is that the water is being constantly circulated in the chamber - basically, water turns into brew, both of which are running through the grounds. Just remember to eventually turn it off, or your co-workers/family will scream bloody murder. Not that I have personal experience with that, or anything...

I came in here to see if anyone remembers percolators. They have no moving parts and no heating element, either.
