Chris Roth served on a jury for a civil case that lasted for seven days. The case was interesting (involving a stripper), but seven days in a jury box is still a long time. Jurors were given notebooks to jot down important things, so Roth drew pictures. Lots of them, which you can see at his blog. Link

I can listen much better when I doodle. I can't imagine sitting that long without something to doodle on. It would be shear torture for me.

actually, i've heard of a research which concluded that doodling while listening improves comprehension.

Gosh, my college professors feel pretty disrespected if I doodle in class. And I'm an art major. I can only imagine how the judge might feel...

@Rumson: I'm a jury duty lottery winner. Called up 7 times and counting... On the one case I was actually chosen for (a civil case) we were ordered NOT to take notes as well. I don't know why and I hated that. I concentrate better on long-winded speaking when I can jot down notes. If I can't, my mind tends to wander and it was so hard to keep focused those 5 days I sat on the jury. I've often wondered why sometimes you can take notes and sometimes you can't.
