Farting on School Bus Sent Kid to Detention

[YouTube Clip]

11-year-old Christian Summers, like many kids (and adults, for that matter), think that passing gas is funny. But not the school bus driver lady, no siree!

According to his school bus driver, he also thinks passing gas is fun. She didn't find his flatulence so funny.

"She's like, 'I'm gonna sign you up. I'm gonna sign you up'. I'm like, 'It was an accident," said Summers.

For letting it rip on the ride home, Christian was slapped withn an hour of detention at Thoreau Park Elementary.

"I thought it was pretty dumb," said Summers.

It seems breaking wind is now breaking the rules. The detention slip reads, quote "Thinks it's funny to pass gas while on the van. I've told him it's not funny, nor polite to the others in the van. While others scream, he laughs."

But what does a kid do when he's got to fart?

Christian now fears his flatulence. If he's caught passing gas on the bus again, he could get four or five days of detention.

"Depends on how much more gas he has," said his father.

Now he's secretive when letting one slip on his small school bus.

"When I have to pass gas, I have to cover myself because it won't stink up the bus," said Christian.

On the one hand, I think the bus drive overreacted. On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with teaching a kid that it's not appropriate to intentionally fart loudly, and that the proper thing to do is try to let it out slowly and quietly. Nothing wrong with teaching kids basic manners.

ditto Craig up there. There's not enough teaching going on outside of the classroom anymore. This kid will be a whole lot more pleasant to be around later on if he learns a few things now- like don't be obnoxious. I hope the district stands by this driver.

He's 11. This is pretty much his last chance to fart loudly in front of a bunch of people in a hilarious way. He'll stop farting loudly when impressing girls becomes more important. The only lesson he'll learn from this is that humorless, power-tripping jerks with authority can and will do whatever they want to you if they don't personally like you.

You guys are boring. Didn't you have Beavis and Butt-Head when you were growing up? If you had then you'd know that farting on the bus is HILARIOUS, as this kid has obviously learned on his own.

I guess I should mention that I'm anosmic, which makes it all the better.

Wow. There's a time a place for everything, but he's a kid. And farting is funny. I think the bus driver overreacted. A warning that she doesn't want to hear it on her bus would have been alright, but detention? No. Like she's never farted before...

As a teacher I wanted to add that when kids pull this kind of thing it's disruptive to the class (or whatever environment they're in). They'll all be working quietly, behaving themselves, and then someone lets one rip and it stinks to high heaven and everyone around him has to cause a scene. And the kid who caused the problem thinks it's HILARIOUS. Meanwhile, I have to spend 10 minutes getting them all back on task.

I've been in this situation where the student has been repeatedly warned not to disrupt the class with inappropriate and rude actions and they just keep doing it. And while this isn't a classroom, a school bus full of kids acting up can be just as dangerous.

I hope the school sticks by this bus driver.

Whatever. I've been given detentions for stupider reasons than that. When I was 17, a teacher claimed that she found a "piece of rubbish" that had my name on it. Despite the fact that I never littered (and if I did, I wouldn't be writing my name on it) and demanded to know more about this piece of rubbish (my requests were declined), I was given an hour detention. For all I knew, she just wanted to give me a detention because she didn't like my face. But did I go running to Fox News with my story?

Have any of you worked with "bad seed" children? That one fart is not what got him detention. It was his previous history of disruptive behavior as well as his parent's (if they exist) lack of ability to control him.

If anyone is interested, contact me via e-mail and I will tell you how I was able to get permanently banned from serving detention.

What is the problem ? He is 11 years old, so he passed gas, who does'nt ? I have one very important thing to tell him, and this always works for me. I am at the age where every step one slips. After you fart, give the person beside you a dirty look and shake you head. Dianne

Farting is so last week.
Upcoming entertainment on board the school bus will
include burping, vigorous nose blowing, booger launching
and smearing chocolate on the seat to look like poo.

Each and every effort to amuse oneself will be accompanied by rounds of phone calls, meetings with the parents and the old standby, detention.

I had such a child once, totally unlike his mannerly sibling. Every school year took at least three of my own off my life. He grew up to be nice and normal.

Jeez, this is going to be embarrassing in a couple years when he's actually interested in impressing girls. "Oh, you're the fart boy? From Youtube? No thanks."
Also, the kid and his parents just seem like brats for going to Fox. Sad.

Yeah, I agree with others. It's not the farting, it's how he went about it, that got him in trouble. Was he farting on other kids? Probably. And sometimes when you do something "normal" in a particularly obnoxious or otherwise abnormal way, you lose the benefit of the doubt as to the deed being natural and necessary, and get written-up for it. Sounds like a good life lesson, one that even the kid's parents should probably learn from rather than making a stink about.

...y'all do realize that farts are smelly and the last thing most people want is to sit and smell the inside of someone's asshole, right? It's not the sound of a fart that does it, it's really the smell. No really, it is. It's the smell.

I agree with Craig.
And as a school bus driver I can say that writing him up was apparently that driver's "last straw".

I tell my kids, if they feel gassy, at least open a window. That way we dont have to sit in their stink, when they do fart. Trying to explain how rude and impolite it is to make others suffer your gaseoue emissions does not work. So I resort to explaining it as particles of poo. When you breathe in a fart, you are breathing in tiny particles of poo.

@ Molly - the school sticking by the driver, probably has nothing to do with it. It will be the bus contractor.
And it is disruptive. As a driver, we are already watching the road, the traffic around us, the kids who are already disobeying the rules, the loud kids..etc... when kids shriek because another one farts, you do not know if maybe a wasp has stung a child or there is a fight? And usually a shriek from a child can cause a "jerk" reaction, which can be dangerous itself.

I recently quit my job as a school-age daycare teacher and bus driver (not for this reason) and completely agree with the driver. I had to pull my bus over on many occasions because of disruptive behavior that interfered with my ability to SAFELY transport them on the bus, and for this private daycare, safety was supposedly the #1 priority.

I also had one 8 year old student who thought it was funny to run up to other children and fart next to them. At one point he received a threat from another student that he'd be beat up if he did it again. It did not happen (because I intervened), but it is easy to see how such behavior can escalate.

holding in farts is unhealthy, and if done long enough it can poison your intestines and you could die of cancer.
definitely do not give a kid detention for his natural body functions.
