Inflatable Helmet

The Hövding, developed by Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin, is an inflatable helmet. It's designed to protect a bicyclist's head without mussing his/her hair:

Hövding is a discreet collar that the cyclist is wearing around his neck. The collar contains a folded airbag which is visible only at a collision. The airbag is designed as a hood that in case of an accident will enclose and protect the cyclist’s head. Release mechanism is controlled by sensors that register abnormal movements of the rider in an accident.

At the link, you can watch a video of the helmet inflating during crash tests.

Like fashion models ride bikes. And the rest of the world don't give a damn if their precious hair gets messed up or if their bike helmet doesn't match their scarf.

But it would be fun to wear one in a crowded elevator and pop the panic button half way up.

Sure, and that hideous thing aint gonna pop. Moment it hits the ground, bang! How'd it get CSA approved? Did I mention ugly? Really really ugly? Oh, and now you gotta blow your helmet up before you ride?

Guess the day-glo spandex crowd will have to upgrade their wardrobe. Neat idea, though, for folks who hate wearing helmets. But I think the cost will be high, and how do you keep the sensors from false triggering?
