MP3 Experiment

(YouTube link)

The folks at Improv Everywhere used 3,000 participants for their latest mission. Each had an MP3 player that received simultaneous instructions (and music). That had to appear really strange to anyone not in on the plan! It all culminated in a flashmob at Bryant Park. Link -via The Daily What

I filmed and participated in a previous improveverywhere mp3 experiment in vienna last year. you can see the complete 44 minute trip with audio here:

This crowd-action was designed by Charlie Todd, the founder of Improv Everywhere, and he is often in the video. Participants were told the following:

Instructions: 1. Download the Mp3: Download Page (Right click and save the link. If you just click on the link it will start playing in your browser. Spoilers!) Note: The filename for the track is “mp3_experiment.mp3? and the album, artist, and track name will be “Mp3 Experiment.” 2. Load the track onto your mp3 player (iPod, etc.) 3. Do not listen to the track. 4. On Saturday, wear a t-shirt that is one of the following colors: Red, Blue, Yellow, or Green. 5. Bring an uninflated balloon. (Any kind of balloon that can be blown up.) 6. Bring a watch with a second hand (or use your cell phone if it displays seconds.) Before you leave, sync it up to this atomic clock: 7. As 7:00 approaches, take a seat anywhere in the main courtyard of museumsquartier. 8. At exactly 7:00:00, press play.

Sounds like Craig's got a case of the grumpies. Maybe next time, don't click on the link, and concentrate on the 99.99996% of the Internet that does not feature Improv Everywhere. I know it's hard, but you're up to the challenge, aren't you?

I think this one worked better before they all converged on Bryant Park. The stuff among the general public is always more entertaining, because people _reacting_ to weird behavior are always funnier than the weird behavior itself.

This has officially jumped the shark. Not funny, lame and just more of the same.

This whole mp3 idea was so dumb.

The other IE have been pretty good. But it is old, stale and not really all that original at this point.

Basically, it's just a bunch of people doing stupid pointless stuff and demonstrating how empty their lives and minds are, and the voice is obnoxious as hell. The bit where they started folding the shirts, though, had potential. What if someone used a flash mob to actually ACCOMPLISH something? Or would that be too boring for these mush-heads to participate in?

These have gotten tired because some ideas outlive their originality and usefulness. Then it becomes, "oh those people are doing some Internet thing. Just ignore them."

The shock value has worn off.

Call me negative, but I'm with a lot of the other commenters here. What started off as a cool, humorous idea has become old and tired. The smugness just oozes from the video. And in a lot of the shots it seemed that at least 9 out of 10 people visible were in on the joke.

Fewer participants. Newer gags. Please.

I think the organizers of this are going to one day do some amazing heist or crime and all of these loyal volunteers are going to be part of the disguise or interference at some point. Could you imagine how hard it would be to catch someone specific wrapped in tp in that mess? It would be a perfect getaway.
