Clinton N. Godlesky noticed that you can get souvenirs from every state, but those souvenirs are not necessarily made in that state -or even in the US! So he started collecting earth from states that he traveled through, and has samples from 34 states. If you have a hankering for a piece of Alabama or Oklahoma or Wyoming, it can be yours, for $1.99 for just a couple of teaspoons or more for larger size containers. I can see sending one of these to someone as a gift and them thinking it's some sort of spice from the state when it's in that jar. Then they sit down to a delightful dirt rubbed beef brisket.

Seems like there should be some sterilization of dirt sent long distances.... to neighboring states, probably not, but there could be all sorts of stuff that my dirt would have that, say, Alaska's won't, and does NOT need....

I've been doing this since 1998 and have 28 now (not bad since I've never been to the East Coast with all those nice small and relatively closely spaced states). My samples look lovely in their clear glass jars.

I knew someone who collected sand from different beaches. I always thought it was a little - what's the word? trite? I don't know, he was a bit uppity, so maybe it was just him.
