3500 Year Old Tree The Senator

Imagine a tree, 3500 years old, and the history and knowledge it must possess. The Senator is a species of Bald Cypress situated at Big Tree Park in Longwood, Florida. For year, travelers flocked to the tree, jumping log to log in the swamps, to catch a glimpse of this world wonder.

The Senator Bald Cypress tree measures close 18 feet in diameter and stands 118 feet high. The Senator's age is estimated between 3,400-3,500 years old, the 5th oldest tree in the world.

Old is cool, but we've got redwoods around here in the 250 foot range, a couple of which can be climbed to the very tip without ropes or climbing gear. Getting to the first branch on this thing looks like a real pain.

At first glance, this tree has no branches on the lower part, so you would be right about that. I think The Senator is more revered for being old, because I know there are several Sequoias(General Sherman of course) that are higher and have larger diameters. The age on this Bald Cypress, though, puts her in the oldest category in the world.

It just blows me away that a tree could be around for 3500 years and still be so small... A ridiculous statement to most people, of course, my own baseline for how big trees ought to be being seriously warped by growing up in the middle of a redwood forest. We used to point and laugh at the tourists as kids because they'd pull off and take pictures of the trees. The whole time we were like, wtf is wrong with these people? It's a friggin' tree.

And then we went to Wyoming and we were like, "wow! look at all the corn!!"

Wait...you said that The Senator is a "species" of bald cypress? That would mean that there are at least several of these "Senators." But your article implies that there is only one.

@Juice

From a naturalistic standpoint,trees are the eyes to history. They are living, as are we. So to say they experience nothing, well it's just impossible.

"The Senator", a species of Bald Cypress, is the only Bald Cypress referred to as "The Senator". Senator is the name, it's the largest known individual specimen and a species of conifer native to the southeastern United States.
