Their long and fascinating history has left most of the larger islands holding two or three monikers. Pot Rock Island is also known as Treasure Island, a name bestowed upon it after Captain Kidd landed here while sailing the Long Island Sound in 1665. This bit of land proved an effective hiding place, as it rises higher out of the water than any other of the islands. Legend says that the pirate buried a portion of his treasure here, yet none has yet been found.
