Non-Intoxicating Alcohol in Development

In the Star Trek universe, synthehol is a substance that simulates the taste of alcohol without its inebriating effects. Three and a half years ago, Alex mentioned that a British pharmacologist named David Nutt claimed that such a substance was hypothetically possible. Now Nutt is leading a research team at Imperial College London to develop this drug:

Prof Nutt and his team are concentrating their efforts on benzodiazepines, of which diazepam, the chief ingredient of Valium is one.

Thousands of candidate benzos are already known to science. He said it is just a matter of identifying the closest match and then, if necessary, tailoring it to fit society’s needs.[...]

“I’ve been in experiments where I’ve taken benzos,” said Professor Nutt. “One minute I was sedated and nearly asleep, five minutes later I was giving a lecture.

“No one’s ever tried targeting this before, possibly because it will be so hard to get it past the regulators.

“Most of the benzos are controlled under the Medicines Act. The law gives a privileged position to alcohol, which has been around for 3,000 years. But why not use advances in pharmacology to find something safer and better?”

No not always- I'd give an arm and a leg for a strict non-intoxicating version of good wine or beer when I'm responsible for driving home. Because right now the socalled alcohol-free versions of those products are just rubbish.

If I'm out at a restaurant or a non-rowdy party, this would be an interesting way to enjoy the social lubricant without worrying about limiting my intake.

To me, though, half-or-more of the alcohol "experience" is its intoxicating effect. Alcohol goes well with some foods, but if I want a drink that ACTUALLY tastes good on its own, I'll go for fruit juice!

Check the article again -- Nutt DOES want some mild intoxicating effects, just not full-blown drunkenness and hangovers. Also it says that ideally the new product would be tasteless.

Ah- that's better- I don't know where you lot all come from, but here on the European Continent, we have some awesome beers and wines that are brewed mainly for their taste. The alcohol in it makes an important part of the whole taste of those beverages an the intoxicating effect is way-secondary and far less important to that. So if you guys want to go for intoxication- fine- sure- that is a different kind of drinking. In that case stick to gallons of bad lager, vodka and cheap wine where taste is non-important and intoxication-percentage is important. But if you want to drink true beers and wines and if you want to take time to savour them... Well- drink the better stuff.

I heard that Penn State's most popular beer is Natural Light, and that everyone pretty much agrees it tastes horrible. One student said, "If they made a Drunk button, that would be perfect."

I don't know exactly what that Star Trek stuff is, but the scientist isn't trying to develop a drink which tastes like alcohol but doesn't make you drunk. Did you even read the article? He's trying to develop a drug which makes you cheerful like the early stages of drinking, but not drunk or hungover, like later stages.

If I'd drink wine for the taste, I'd rather drink grape juice instead which tastes a lot better. Wine is just rotten ("fermented" for you scientists and enthusiasts) juice.

I think AmbroseC is right, this is what I've heard as well.

 What a bunch of ....Barbarians... are y'all out here!!!

Really - Find yourselves some good Belgian beers or some well-brewed Stout and just try for once to Táste...! :-D

Hey, I'm from Europe. I enjoy Belgian beers and good wines but main thing I enjoy about them is that they let me get hammered while drinking something that doesn't taste like a disinfectant (cheap Vodka). Only reason why alcohol is 'social lubricant' is cos its intoxicating. If you wanna avoid hangovers, stay clear of binge drinking and stick to the time tested method of marathon drinkers, one glass of water per every two doses of alcohol.

The premise of the article's hook is incorrect. Synthehol *is* intoxicating. However, the buzz can be dismissed willing it away. http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Synthehol

Aye, it's not non-alcoholic alcohol. It's a drug that effects the user like alcohol for a short period of time. I was confused, for a second I thought people were getting excited over the reinvention of near-beer.

You (and most of us) were confused because that's exactly what the title of the post describes. This other thing, what's actually being invented, sounds great.
