deviantART user William Chua of Singapore created this remix of Super Mario Bros. and classical Japanese illustration. He claims inspiration by both Super Mario Bros. and the game Monster Hunter.
Although I'm a little nit-picky since I noticed that it reads "???" right next to Mario. That's his Chinese transliterated name, but this is a Japanese picture.
After studying Chinese for a while, you tend to notice these things.
@teh yoshi There are Chinese characters in the Japanese language too. Probably due to the fact that during the Tang dynasty, the Chinese culture began to spread to Japan.
But true, that isnt his Jap name. But since this is supposed to be an acient Japanese picture, using Chinese does fit well.

(I take it I can't write Chinese in these comments?)
