10 Absolutely Pathetic Packaging Fails

Most of what we buy is packaged, and that can only be bad news for our environment because all that paper and plastic needs energy, water and oil to create and lots landfill space to get rid of it. Even wore is the fact that the vast majority of it is used only once, making this waste even more abhorrent.

A preoccupation with cleanliness, however, is fuelling ever-greater demand for packaged food products and other goods. While wrapping meat, for example, demonstrates good hygiene, packaging individual bananas and dried fruits is clearly insane!

I won't shop at Morrisons (where the bananas come from) because of just this sort of thing. They shrink-wrap red peppers and once, coconuts. Their loose bananas come on a plastic hook that weighs more than a plastic bag - but it /looks/ less.

I think if we want to cut out all the use of plastic for packaging, we need to completely redesign how it's sold. Most of which is used to dangle in front of people and pray on their impulse thoughts with "bigger is better" packaging, being able to see the product through a hard plastic container, and "Oh look! Shiny!" attention grabbing foil artwork. Smart shoppers are bad for the economy, but it's the stupid ones that drive it forward.
