The Value of United States Currency in Circulation - Neatorama

Millions of US coins and bills are exchanged daily and billions of them are in circulation. Visual Economics put together a great graphic to compare the values and number of currency in circulation, and even looked at how long each stays in circulation.

Would you have guessed there are almost ~~6 times~~ as many $100 bills in circulation as there are $20 given that most ATMs use only $20s? Would you have guessed the $5 bill has the shortest life expectency of any bill, or that there are 4 times as many pennies than any other coin?

According to the site you posted, there are actually more $20 bills in circulation than $100 bills.

True. If each of those 20's was a 100, there'd be $625.5 billion worth, where actual 100's add up to 625 bil. Interesting graph, but pretty tough to interpret...

Thanks if and yugosakimi - I have to shamefully admit I am responsible for that mistake. I spent too much time looking at the graphic and then wrote the post very quickly before going to a meeting. I looked at the value numbers, not number in circulation, and fouled it up.

The largest circulated note in the UK is the £50 - and hardly anyone ever sees one, partly because many places don't like taking them.

$100 bill abound. They're the highest denomination available so they make sense for large physical cash transactions. Maybe they are more associated with drug deals but go to any casino, and you'll see plenty.

I'm more shocked that there are 850 million $2 notes in circulation. Obviously not at taco bell though lol...
