The Money Floor (Alas, Only Pennies)

It makes odd cents.

Even once you've costed in the adhesive and grout, it's still probably a lot cheaper than most flooring. Antiseptic, too - few things will grow on copper and its alloys. That's why coins don't spread disease - though the same probably isn't true of notes.

Given the price of some wallpaper I guess papering with fivers could come out cheaper, too.

Possibly the dirtiest "clean" floor ever? Gross. Only for clean freaks like me though. The idea's really cool. That would suck if they couldnt fit the pennies on the sides or corners after filling up the whole room...

Plus wouldn't it SMELL??

Unless they used real copper pennies, the copper veneer will eventually rub off and expose the zinc interiors. And though it looks quite attractive, I would think that the letters and other features of the coins would collect that sticky black dirt that is difficult to clean.

Seems like a great idea! Presumably they varnished the pennies, and whatever they're embedded in, to keep them clean and shiny.

Unless there was a very thick coating of polymer over the pennies, they would wear out in a matter of months. Even if they did apply a coating, it looks like it would peel off the pennies after only a few seasons.

Oh, and let me the first to point out that doing this is a federal crime.

This is not impressive at all if you have ever been to "The Other Place" in Meadville, PA (small town bar also known as the Penny Bar). Every surface is covered in pennies, creating penny flags, maps, clocks and miniature Lincoln and Jefferson memorials made out of pennies. Since it is illegal to destroy US pennies, the owner used Canadian pennies in cases where he needed to cut corners into the pennies to make the designs look right. Literal Penny Tiles! I love it!

The floor of the Cup Cafe at the Hotel Congress in Tucson, Arizona, also is made of pennies. They are sealed with something, so no wear at all is evident -- and this place receives very high traffic. It looks cool.

Without a coating, wouldn't it smell like pennies in the room after awhile? Eww.

I saw this a few days ago and was thinking of making a table like that, only with clear epoxy or something.

Ugh...that nasty metallic penny smell would drive me insane.

Oh come on- it looks awesome, and given that it's the Standard I'm sure they sealed it up good and proper. Now.. I want to see one done in dimes!

It is not illegal to glue pennies to the floor. Once it is in your possession you own it. It is illegal to "fraudulently" deface or mutilate currency or negotiable instruments. (18 U.S.C. 331)

In other words, scribbling all over a dollar bill is legal. Trying to turn a $1 bill into a $100 bill is illegal.

I think the penny floor is awesome and I am going to do it to a floor in my own home.
