Michael Jackson Tribute

(YouTube link)

The dancing inmates of Cebu prison in the Philippines (featured previously at Neatorama) presented a choreographed tribute to Michael Jackson yesterday. 1,500 inmates participated. The best is the middle part, where you'll see dancing nuns and prisoners doing the Thriller dance to "I'll Be There". -via Buzzfeed

all I can say is "he who is without sin cast the first stone" and not one here can claim a sinless life... so lets pay tribute to the good things that MJ brought to the world instead of focusing on the bad. RIP MJ

This is a definite generalization, but I work in the Philippines, and it seems like Filipinos generally are better at looking past the bad in people and celebrating the good in them. Michael Jackson was very screwed up as an adult. But at one time, he was an innocent young child with an amazing voice and innovative ideas about dance. He was a brilliant young man. To say it's a shame that his life turned out the way it did is an understatement. I don't think I can think of any life that spun out of control so very tragically.

I was never a fan of Michael, but man, watching these inmates dance to some of his songs from when he was a kid still got me awfully emotional. It makes a person wish they could roll back time and raise him right, with love and understanding. I think that's all he ever wanted in his life.

(…And when I say that Filipinos are generally better at seeing the good in people, I say that as a non-Filipino, with the understanding that all people are different. But on average, I stand by my statement that Filipinos are far above average at their ability to see through to the good in people.)

It's funny, just a day or two ago, I was wondering if the prisoners in the Philippines were going to do any kind of Michael Jackson tribute, and now I found out that they have.

As for the people making negative comments about Michael Jackson, I wish that they would read an article that Stephen King wrote a few years ago in which he argued that, while Michael Jackson definitely had poor judgment about certain things, he should be considered innocent until proven guilty and that simply being weird is not a crime.

I don't think that prison is sectioned off depending on sexual orientation. From what I read all of the inmates at that particular institution are required to dance 5 hours a day. It seems to have helped with the prison gang problem there.

I am full of respect to these people --- there are prisoners for some reason... and here, they dance and perform, and learn and do something impressive --- if MJ would see that they performed the most important message --- he would be proud. I believe he is proud indeed --- there, above us all, with the Angels.
