Japanese Cute Ambassadors

These three girls are the first official ambassadors of cute for Japan. In an effort to compete with China and other world super powers, Japan has decided to exploit their status as one of (if not the) cutest countries in the world. To reach this goal, they've hired the girls above. The one on the left is a school girl. The one on the right is a Japanese Lolita girl. The one in the middle makes up her own style, but has become a semi-celebrity in the trendy Harijuku district.

As fun as this idea is, do you really think cute ambassadors will help Japan compete in a world market?

Is there really any competition against Japan in pure strangeness? They really do seem to be above and beyond everyone else. Example: these girls, creepy.

I love the Japanese and all their weirdness. I am also just relieved that they didn't come out with some sort of tentacle monster ambassador.

I don't know that these girls will help Japan in any way whatsoever, but bless their little hearts for trying.

Another manifestation of a certain male urge to have sex with really young girls. The more you really think about it, the weirder it gets. Cute Lolitas represent a country where you can have a drink in a bar while above you girls in school uniforms dump a sh*t on a glass ceiling. I think LostInDaJungle is spot on with his comment on yesbutnobutyes.com

I agree with Supaswag, this is just another example of the Japanese infantilizing women because they have a sick obsession with the violation of young girls. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Japanese people in general are lovely people and they have a lot to offer the world artistically/technologically etc. But this unhealthy fascination with very young girls, rape and shaming or debasing women is indicative of some seriously sick cultural issues.

This is obviously a fake article at The Onion: http://www.theonion.com/content/news/japan_pledges_to_halt_production but it makes a good point.

I wonder how a picture of three girls became a discussion about sick cultural issues with young girls and defecating in bars, lol. The lolita outfit/concept is a mainstay of anime/cosplay gatherings, so I can see that part. The middle I have no idea what that is, looks like something from the 80's. The school girl on the left I admit it is a bit creepy.

I keep thinking their cuteness has to do with their outfits and how they conduct themselves not their face or beauty.
One just has to google Japanese Cute Culture to find a lot more attractive candidates. Course, these girls probably had better PR agents.

PS - Thanks for the link!

Huh...? These girls are not cute. They're borderline odd looking. There are FAR more attractive Japanese gals out there. That chick in the middle is weirding me out, and agree with what Tylerp else said, the one on the left looks like a Gelfling from Dark Crystal. The one on the right looks ok, but very plain.
Whoever picked these three needs to try again.

I would bet money that the girl in the middle has had eye-widening surgery. It is an extremely popular trend in Japan, and it has been linked to the anime popularity and the idea that that type of girl, with the wide eyes, is desirable. I don't know if this is true, but she does not look Japanese to me, so this defeats the whole thing, in my opinion.

Oh god...exactly who are they competing with? There are far cuter japanese girls out there than these three...

They should just send some JE boys XD because those boys actually have a huge fanbase AND they're cuter than these girls

Am I the only one who finds these girls creepy? I thought about it a while before posting this, and yes, I still find them rather creepy.

I don't think they are cute at all.

Oh and one more thing...

Could you imagine if one of these girls began following you around the city? Every time you looked around, you'd see her walking towards you, that little smile on her face... You'd walk and walk... and she'd follow... You'd hop on a bus thinking you's be safe, but no, she'd be there, at the far end... waiting for you to get off again... that little smile, those perfectly laundered clothes, the hair... the little bow... unchanged... still smiling....

Stalking... creeping.... following you, but always at the exact same distance...

Ok, I'm going to quit now, I have the willies!

Having lived in China for a few months, I can tell you the Japanese are losing the battle when it comes to the cuteness factor of the general population. This is just a death rattle before the army of Chinese Hello-kitty wearing 30ty-ish business women will finish them off.

I'm guessing the people above who commented don't know who the hell these people are. I don't think these girls were chosen simply because they were 'Cute', but because they represented 3 different mainstreams of 'cuteness' in Japan.

The left one = the typical japanese school girl (although I'l admit her smile does kinda freak me out)
the middle one = the young fashionista who puts tgt her own coordinates. She may not be pretty or an artiste, but she's a harajuku celeb of some sorts. The Harajuku fashionista.
the right one = The Lolita. She's a popular model for the brand, Baby the Stars Shine Bright. & I do think she's really cute. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9w7TaXJW_qM/Sa9aL2d_5JI/AAAAAAAAAnY/vTYscPZMRjM/s400/lolita.jpg

So its the Japanese School Girl, the Harajuku Fashionista and the Lolita. These 3 girls are simply the reps for these 3 groups of 'cuteness' in Japan.

The girl on the left, Fujioka Shizuka, is not a school girl. She's 21! According to several webpages she's acting and modeling, especially for expensive brands which are selling school uniforms. I didn't know anything about her before her becoming "cute ambassador". Same for the one in the middle. I guess that her style falls into a category of harajuku fashion which is called "spank". (Correct me if I'm mistaken, I don't know much about this style) For sure she's not the single one in Japan dressed like this. I know the Lolita girl, though. She's in every edition of the Gothic Lolita Bible.
According to the page of the ministry of foreign affairs of Japan the girls had been elected because they are playing leading roles in their own fashion sectors: Shizuka-school uniform fashion,Yu-Spank(?) fashion, Misako-Lolita fashion. Their looks weren't important at all. Japanese cuteness isn't about looks, at least not about looks as in our Western sense of the word. When talking about the Japanese sense of cuteness I got the following for an answer: "Not everybody can be beautiful, but everybody can be cute." I suppose that the Japanese sense of cuteness is a very diplomatic thing. ;)

1) Fujioka Shizuka is NOT a school girl. She models for brands which sells school uniforms, which is, on it's own, a fashion in Japan.
2) Yu Kimura is a GAL model, she models for gyaru magazines, but also wears a lot of Spank clothing, she isn't 'mixing her own style', or 'creating her own style', she's PART of a HUGE fashion trend called 'gyaru'. Look it up.
3) Misako Aoki is a model who models for lolita brands such as Baby the Stars Shine Bright.

AT LEAST RESEARCH THE PEOPLE YOU WRITE ABOUT. Jesus.
