Cat Has Photography Exhibit

Remember the Cat Cam? A cat in Seattle wore a camera one day a week for a year, and now those photographs have their own exhibit in an art gallery! Cooper the tomcat has 16 framed photos displayed at the Urban Light Studios in the Greenwood Collective through March 10th.
"We never thought we'd have an artist that is an American Shorthair cat," said Kevin Law, owner of the gallery and a professional photographer. "But after reading the PhinneyWood blog and seeing his photos, I was immediately blown away. He has classical compositions right out of a photo textbook. There may be no intent behind them, but they're beautiful artwork."

I find myself wondering about the actual artistic merit of this. The cat isn't purposefully taking photos, the camera simply automatically goes off every two minutes. I'll grant that it's definitely interesting, but I don't know if I'd go so far as to say art worthy.

I have known the owner of this cat since we were both in 5th grade, he has always been a very creative and inventive individual. While I applaud the originality of this project, part of me cringes when I think of the people I know who actually went to school for photography and have not had the media attention that this feline has had showered upon him. Its a great idea but I'd much rather see a gallery filled with photos taken with real artistic intention.

If nothing else, these photos make you smile and forget about any worries for a few mere moments! Thanks Miss Cellania for promoting our gallery exhibit with Cooper. To be honest, my husband (professional photog himself) saw the photos, really liked a few of them and laughed when he realized they were by a cat. So he called the owners and suggested setting up an exhibit where people could see them in large format. There has been a huge outpouring of support and interest... people love cats and people love a great story! I hope you dont mind if I leave a shameless plug but if you want to purchase a custom matte, framed, "paw-tographed" print go to www.urbanlightstudios.com/cooper
