We all (okay, most of us) have hair - but how much do you know about the stuff that grows on our head? AskMen has a neat article on the 5 things you didn't know about ... the human hair:

There’s a conspiracy theory that redheads are alien-human hybrids. Think about it: Why did several kings and queens of Europe have red hair even though, percentage-wise, redheads are fairly rare? Why do so many Southies have red hair and speak a different language than other Boston locals?

It sounds crazy, but carrottops do have biological differences other than appearance. Redheaded women bleed longer, which is why doctors make special preparations for them in childbirth. They also have the smallest hair count on their heads, about 90,000 as opposed to 140,000 on people with blond and brown hair. That’s why Kick a Ginger Day began, just to keep these possible aliens on their toes.

It seems a shame that while so many people are berating the pranksters who change roadsigns, no one is saying "kick a ginger day" which is a direct threat to people to be in any way contentious. No, I'm not a redhead, but given how so many have been teased and bullied unmercilessly as children, just due to their hair colour, I find it distasteful that anyone would be so retarded as to promote it as adults.

I agree with ratz. This is a very bad thing to publicize. Please remove it from your blog. I don't like racism of any type but this is really outrageous, enciting violence against people because of their hair color and saying they are not fully human.

The British have this strange fascination with ginger people, it seems they do nothing but talk about how strange they are. In America we just call them "Rusty" and get on with it, nobody cares if you're ginger here.

Sofar, when I moved to the UK, this ginger thing might have been the strangest difference between our cultures. In the States, they are considered lucky at baseball games, but here, you would think that they eat unbaptized kids for breakfast. Weird.

Personally, I think anyone that is going to assume that a redhead is part alien has bigger issues to deal with.

because the royal family was pretty inbred to "keep the royal line going". if red hair was genetic on both sides at any point, it would be destined to re-circulate throughout the royal family. the aspects of the percentage were skewed by the selective habits of the royal family... aka inbreeding. awesome.

Red heads are hot. There's some attraction field to red heads, I wonder if that's why they are considered alien? Because so many people are attracted to their hair??? And I agree with jjjj- we need to hug or kiss the redheads, not kick, that's just mean. I'm not a red head, but overall, it doesn't matter what skin color or hair color you are, because once you die, all of that doesn't matter. Human beings can be f-ed up, that's all I'm going to say (and NO, I'm not an alien either. I'm just stating that human nature is messed up).

As a redhead, I'll issue a challenge to anyone looking to kick me on "kick a ginger day". We're also known for our bad tempers so I suggest you NOT kick a redhead. :)

I quite like this site. But it absolutely pisses me off that people think that suggesting something like Kick a GInger day is in anyway acceptable, or funny. Or that reporting on it without condemning it is acceptable.
I mean Christ almighty, how about - Kick the yellow skin day?

I was so jealous of my brother when I was younger because he had red hair. But he burns up in the sun really fast, and my boyfriend dislikes redheads so I guess i'm kind of lucky?

I am a little bit ginger. I do not mind the "kick a red head" day. We gingers have a lot of festivities that follow it. Most notable is the "Clocking of the individual who takes fictitous holidays to serious".

I think that those people who take such an event seriously must have some issues. And those that may participate in the day in a violent way, probably were looking for an excuse to act out in a violent manner.

The "Kick a Ginger" day was started as a joke on facebook somewhere after someone had seen an episode of southpark.

I am looking forward to when there is a "Kick a Ginger Zombie" day.

As a redhead, I don't understand why you guys are all upset over Kick a Ginger Day. I think it's pretty funny, and am prepared to defend myself. It's just a joke, people.

Also, the redheads-as-aliens is explored in a Tom Robbins book, Still Life with Woodpecker. But heads up - if the idea of Kick a Ginger Day is very unfunny to you, you will hate Robbins.

My daughter is a red head (recessive genes) and she is the only one in the family with red hair. Since she is now only 7 years old she does not feel self conscious about this yet. We do all we can to let her know just how beautiful she is.

When I see stuff like "Kick a Ginger Day" it really breaks my heart and makes me hate humanity. I also read a blog post once about how ginger children have no souls and it also broke me heart.

Why does there have to be so much hate toward red headed people? In America it might be better than in the UK but they still have an old saying "like a red headed step child" and that's not nice either.

I really wish people would not promote violence toward red headed people, especially children. There is already so much violence in this world and so many narrow minded people who actually believe this trash. Let's stop this now.

Like the "kick a ginger day" the comment about us not having souls also originated from South Park.
Some people need to really stop taking things they read on the internet at face value. Maybe do a little research first.

Some people are aware of the South Park source and understand it is in context there. However, some people also know that there are some people that take the 'kick a ginger day' too seriously in a everyday violent way, particularly in schools.

When you watch South Park, you expect it. You should not watch if you don't. However, when you read a 'news' article about it, you do not expect it.

Some people know 'ginger kids' that do been 'kicked' for how they look, so they are a bit more aware of what it really means.

My brother has red hair and I have a red beard. Kids will torture a redhead, but I don't know many adults that would mess with one. Only stupid ones. Being red as a kid isn't fun but it makes you tough and builds character.

I am a 16-year-old redhead, who is quite happy with her red hair.

My friends and I have never been made fun of for having red hair. We actually have more confidence and more fun than anyine else I know.

I don't find this offensive at all. Rather, I find it to be quite funny.

well the reason why i'm writing here is because i actually fantasize about marrying a redheaded girl with blue or green eyes and hopefully get two little redheaded twin baby girls, one with blue eyes and one with green eyes, but with my skin complexion. ( i'm half black half white by the way...lol)

Hello, I am a red head,am i find this "Kick and Ginger day" very affensive, i am only 13 and i have gone throw so much hurt and pain since i was about 6. It is just like me saying "kick a blonde day or kick a brown or black day" hair(colour). I have only just started to like my hair colour, but i still get teased but i try to ignore this but it hasn't worked. I have told my head of year and he kinda sorter it out, but they stopped and now they have started again, but i can remember the day, where i came home and just started to cry my self to sleep! i was so upset!I just people would get a life! And i know in a sure fact i am not an ALIEN!

Im a redhead and im 16 years old. I was teased in elementary school for it, so i dyed my hair, and i regret it. I wasn't really made fun of because I have such an outgoing personality, and temper, people didn't mess with me in that way. Since red hair is a genetic rarity, we do see as many red heads as we do blonds, brunettes, etc. Unless you are a red head, you don't understand the bit of magic that you feel being so unique. People strive their whole lives to be unique and special, and I recieved that gift when I was born. Oh....and it's a proven fact that Red Heads are the best lovers--hands down!! Bring on Kick a Ginger day. I have a feeling there will be alot of bruised and battered Blonds and Brunettes after the day is done!!

I agree, Ryan. My ex-girlfriend was a redhead. She was certifiable and such a phony. She blamed everyone else and never took any responsibility for any of her problems or emotions. Ok ive read some of the comments and how is it mean or racist its just what they thought was true or is true. I dont know if it is but there is nothing mean or racist about it. Hmm - I will laugh all the way to the bank. As a redhead in Silicon Valley, I have been able to set myself apart from the rest and have a lucrative sales career. It takes a lot of ignorance to claim that hair color dictates intelligence...Of course, I don't hand my income over to the queen either - LOL. I'm a natural red head and quite beautiful.. I was never really teased when I was younger, just a few lighthearted jokes.. I always dyed my hair though when I was a teenager, I personally hated my red hair.. everybody loved it but me.. Now I'm 22 and I'm finally loving my red hair I'm never going to dye it again.. we r so unique and beautiful :)
