New Year's Sparkling Wine Recommendations

I know next to nothing about champagne or sparkling wine, but I do know I'd like to have a bottle that costs more than $3.99 for my little gathering. But not much more than that. Luckily, Slashfood has my back. They have rated eight brands of bubbly of varying tastes and low price points, so if you are as clueless as I am, you should find this helpful. They even have a bottle of champagne sparkling wine that tastes decent and costs, yes, $4.

Freixenet. I heartily recommend this label, and not only because it comes toting the weight of a thousand dramatic romantic memories of my illegal and rapidly receding youth. Also because I heard two respected wine critics sing its praises the other day on the radio, and felt vindicated and inspired.

Delicious, serious. You won't be sorry. At least not that night.

I'm sorry to say not one of those are Champagne. Only wines made in the French Champagne region, with selected places and severe regulations, can apply to the name. Hence the higher price. My favorite? The oldest house : Ruinart.

To be fair, I've tasted bad Champagnes, and I've tasted very good white sparkling wines. So those wines in the list could be really good.

One last thing : low price should never be a key choice factor in choosing wines. Drink less, but better.

in victorian times, they used to commemorate celebrations with champagne and drop a little food coloring in the bottles to make them pink.. green, blue.. i want to make a champagne rainbow this year. i dislike the taste of wine and champagne.. so i sadly have no recommendations.

Christophe does indeed speak the truth, for me my favourite champagnes (within reason) are Bollinger for the fuller flavour (but not as rich as Pol Roger) Veuve Clicquot for a light in England expect to pay between £25 - £30 if you shop around. The Bollinger Grande Annee is even better but will cost around £50.

As for sparkling wine go for a good Cava, Campo Viejo is very reasonable at about £4-£7.

If you're feeling very flush go for Krug or Dom Perignon both are around £100 which for me is too much.

These are good bubbli-wubbli. But can also be substituted by hand squeezing some grapes into a sock, putting it into the microwave for three hours and mixing with paint-thinner.
