Back to School ... Knives?!

Marcy Massura of Marcy Writes - The Glamorous Life blog found this suspicious set of knives at her local supermarket for back to school!

Apparently, it's for kids who can't wait to resume their summer vacation by being suspended for carrying weapons to school! Link - via Miss Cellania

The package says "for apartment, dorm, camper, or office".

Which of those is inappropriate? Or neat?

College is school too. For people who are over 18, and often cook for themselves.

It tries to be funny, but the reality of it is so obvious, ie for first year college students, that the writer seems more oblivious than the product is funny.

Despite the fact that college students are, technically, "kids" going "back to school", the fact that the advertising photograph clearly has a child well below college age (or even grade 9 foods class age) makes this a strange exercise in marketing.

I have to say, if I were going away to college, I'd be a bit miffed to receive a knife set illustrated by a 12 year old.

Geez, people are really reaching to find something humorous or inappropriate in this. The picture is an Asian woman, who is very likely older than 12, but thanks for the stereotype, Kitty.

The idea of giving young people knives is not far-fetched. Maybe if they were back-to-school switchblades...

Reminds me of the last time I went to the grocery store. There was a small section of back to school items (notebooks, pencils, etc., none of it college-specific) and right next to it was sets of kitchen knives. And on the other side of the knives was halloween items. I'm not sure whether they were thinking kids needed knives to go back to school, or knives make for an exciting halloween.
