Wendy the Service Cat Attacked

Neatorama posted the story of Wendy the Service Cat in January. She is the companion of disabled veteran Jeffrey Ward. Here is a sad update to the story: Saturday night, Wendy didn't come home from a bathroom break. Ward found her injured in front of a nearby building.
X-rays showed both pelvic bones were broken - injuries veterinarian John Bevan says are consistent with being kicked or stepped on.

Surgery was performed Monday and a second is scheduled for Tuesday.

"We did a plate and about six screws on the left side, tomorrow we'll repair it with a screw and a pin," said Dr. Bevan.

Ward says he can't allow himself think of the person who did this to Wendy.

"The very thing that helps me cope with confrontation is now the one thing someone's taken away," said Ward.

Dr. Bevan says that Wendy should recover with a couple of month's therapy, but may be left with arthritis. There will be a fundraiser for medical expenses Wednesday at the Third Base bar and grill in Austin, Texas. Link -Thanks, Kimi!

Update: I heard back from the Central Texas Veterinary Specialty Hospital. They told me that Wendy's medical bill has been paid in full, thanks to generous donors. If you want to donate to other animals who need care, you can contact them through their website.

As to if the reprehensible person who committed this act was aware of Wendy's special abilities or not, the act alone is beneath contempt. That said, I wish Wendy and Mr. Ward the very best and will keep them in my thoughts sending every good vibe their way.

P.S. Miss Cellania, thank you for info regarding where to send donations.

While I find that kicking/stepping a cat is an ugly act - I'm still confused as to why is it assumed that it is "ok" just to let a cat take off and have a so called bathroom break (or more specifically deposit feces and or urine) on someone else's property? Do cats have an inalienable right to relieve themselves wherever they want without their owners present to clean up the mess?

andr3w - cats BURY their waste. it's one of the perks of owning one. what about all that bird sh*t then, and fly droppings? your yard is already full of nature's excrement.

sw perhaps but I still think its more responsible as a pet owner to pickup your own cat's waste than it is to have your neighbour's child to dig it out of their own sandbox where your cat "helpfully" buried it. That being said I still hope whoever hurt the cat rots.

Miss Cellania,

We would like to thank you for your generosity but due to the overwhelming
generosity of the community "Wendy's" bill has been paid. If you would like
to set up a fund in our hospital for other special pets that come through
our hospital we can do that for you also and use it as you wish. We do a lot
of work with rescue groups and there are many people that do love their pets
that may not be able to afford services. But again we want to thank you for
Mr. Ward and for Wendy for your kindness.

Thank you,
Mariana Carr
Hospital Manager

Maybe the cat was stepped on accidentally. Cat's face all sorts of dangers from cars to dogs and also from sick people. They also harm endangered and threatened bird species.

The real cluprit when cats are injured outdoors is the owners who let them out. Cats should be kept indoors.

I'm really glad Wendy will recover and is taken care of both physically and financially. Hopefully the rotten POS who hurt her will get a big bite on the booty from karma if they aren't caught and punished by the law.

That being said, I'll also add this is yet another example of why cats should be kept INDOORS. If you absolutely must let your cat(s) outside, they will be safest if they are prevented from leaving your property. There's no excuse, your cat is in harm's way and at the mercy of just anybody on the street if it leaves your house and yard.

I'm dealing with an outside cat I want to help now, he belongs to someone in my apartment complex who lets him run loose 24/7, he's got no collar, tons of fleas, ticks, ear mites AND his balls! My husband is very irritated that I keep bitching about it and want to fix him up. We've got 5 cats now and I guess he thinks I want to take in this one too. Truth be told, I do but I'll settle for just vaxing, flea treating and neutering him since his owner can't be bothered to do it.

Poor little guy. I'll be heartbroken if I see him dead in the road one day. :-(

@ dooflotchie,

Sorry, but I got a giggle when you said, "AND his balls." It took me a moment to get my mind out of the gutter.

I'm glad his kitty's doing better. I can't believe people can do that, but it happens all the time. *sigh*

I have to agree, cats should be INDOORS. In the past before I knew any better, we didn't think twice about cats outside, but after accident after accident occurred, no cat of mine will ever go outside unsupervised. Our cat now is only allowed to walk a few feet outside to munch on grass, and when I say "inside" he goes right in.

Anyways.... the cat may not have been kicked or stepped on. A dog could've easily have injured the cat. Fiance's stupid family recently had their dogs injure one of their cats. Same injuries plus some, enough to where they had to put the cat to sleep...... idiots.

You people blow my friggin' mind. It takes more than a dog stepping on a cat to break bones. Stop trying to make this act seem less heinous so you can rest easy. And I can't BELIEVE someone had the audacity to comment that perhaps since the cat was defecating on someone else's property that gave the the authority to crush this cat. Right, maiming someone or some animal trespassing on your property is perfectly acceptable.

When we find a cat at our place we take them and have them fixed, if they don't seem to be treated well we usually keep them or take them to the Humane Society. I'm not really concerned with what the owners think about it. If they were taking care of them they wouldn't have that problem.

I've never had cats outdoors, it's just a dumb (and rude) idea if you live in the city. I now have 10 acres though, so some of them live outside. And someone new is always showing up.
