Bagpipes were common instruments in all parts of Europe at various times.

Sakpipa? Surely you mean "säckpipa". Säck=bag, pipa=pipe, sak=thing. Thingpipe doesn't make any sense.

I had the pleasure (displeasure) of hearing the bagpipes first hand - from a distance of oh, 30 yards or so, it was still very, very loud.

Anyhow as both a Scot and an Irishman, I love the souind of the pipes.

The Scots version has always been seen as being more of a martial instrument, while the irish pipes, by dint of being played in a sitting position,were not.

The skirl of the pipes will always hold sway over most Celtic peoples. Hell they are played from Islamabad to the arctic circle, so they have got to be douing soemthing right.
