It's probably because cats have super sensitive hearing and it's like somebody repeatebly setting off an airhorn in your face. I think you'd flinch too!

Daft cat, though. We don't get as much fun from ours - she was twenty last month and spends most of her day sitting quietly on the warmest lap she can find, leaving the house only under hydraulic pressure.
ahahahaahha! i laughed a lot for that one. it seems he thinks the sound is coming from the carpet? he looks over at it when the xylophone sounds even after he's left that area. maybe he feels its vibrations through the floor and assumes something is underneath him?
