Japanese festival features fat phalluses for fertility, fortune and fun!

The Kanamara Matsuri (aka "Festival of the Steel Phallus") is a Japanese health and fertility rite dating back as far as 300 years. During the festival, well-wishers literally worship massive, portable representations of the engorged male member. Fun for the whole family! Reuters has video of this year's event.

A cat phallus festival! What a brilliant idea!

Nobody says you can't start your own festival. Where do you live? Is there a significant pro-cat-phallus local population to invest the time and energy required to get such a festival off the ground?

Think about it - you could get rich!

This is nothing new. Sheesh, this has been going on in Japan since forever. It's funny to see these clips show up. The women carrying the shrine are actually men in drag. It's all in good fun. The Japanese take their fertility seriously and if you understand the culture, this is a celebration of life. Nothing to be embaressed about and I find it refreshingly honest.

I don't see what's so strange about this. According to my husband, I'm supposed to worship phallus all day, and deep into the night. Doesn't everyone do this?

I loved the suckers.

And I agree with Rhea - she should fly to Japan and start massive demonstrations to institute a Steel Vagina Festival.

@Rhea:

Exactly!
There are some stalls where you can buy small candy in the form of vulvas but otherwise it's all about the cock. But then, it's just a reflection of Japanese society which is still pretty darn sexist.
