Winning Night Photography

Wired held a contest for user-generated night photos. The winner, decided by votes from readers, is this photo taken in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park in Utah by Jason J. Corneveaux. Wired hs a gallery of the top ten photographs, plus a link to a gallery of ten more selected by their editors. Link -via Geek Like Me

Compare the readers selection for the top 10 to those by the Editors

See the sophistication of the Editors taste.

The readers are mostly geared towards design effects

While the Editors are geared towards technique and effects of nature

One of my dreams is to pack a small backpack and head North to Nunavut and observe the skies as the Auroras dance and I can see the stars in the sky for the very first time (born and lived as a city boy).

I love the night. What I like about this selection of photos are the various ways to experience the night from light in fog to moon over water. One thing I do miss is the stars that were visible growing up. I haven't seen a starfield like that in decades. Sadly, my children have never seen a night sky filled with the Milky Way.
