I have no doubt that the brick was still substantial, but did you notice how easily the other man picked up a half with one hand? Makes me really question the mixture used to create the bricks for these types of demonstrations.
Thing is though, it hurts more not to be able to hit through the brick than it hurts to hit through, since then the hand has to come to a sudden stop as well.
Hence why it's so much in your mind and not just brute force.
well, red, that is sorta a no-brainer. He wouldn't have been able to chop through most normal bricks, nor would he be able to chop through a solid steel bar. but it really does look impressive in ultra slow mo :-D

However, most karate bricks are treated before they are chopped: Soaking wet, in a pan of water, baked at 95C for a few hours. (or something similar)
