Iceberg Breaks Up - Neatorama

If someone told me the local iceberg was collapsing, I would be out there with the crowd watching it. This was recorded in Argentina. The show gets more intense toward the end. ~via Ursi’s Blog

Update: I did a little digging, and this has been identified as the Perito Moreno Glacier {wiki} in Los Glaciares National Park. The breakup is a natural phenomena that can be forecasted, but it’s not regular, happening every one to ten years. It's a big tourist attraction.

I think that's called a glacier, not an iceberg.

True, it's a glacier. But what a show! But the new agey hammer dulcimer music! Yow! I feel all Enya'd up.

Too bad it's part of the global warming trend (according to predominant but not exclusive opinion) - planet wide, glaciers have been disappearing at an alarming rate.

It's not global warming guys. I've been there several times. This particular glacier recedes every summer as it melts due to rising temperatures. And begins forming back again every winter. Global warming has actually caused the size of the glacier to be smaller, but not the actual break up.

A crumbling glacier does not mean global warming. Glaciers have been crumbling for as long as I can remember. Footage like this is nothing new. Where did the iceberg come from that sank the Titanic? Crumbled off a glacier maybe? Global warming is a way for socialists to get more of our money and rights.

Glaciers are "rivers" of snow and ice. Packed snow from higher altitudes is slowly pushed down the mountainside to the valley below. The warmer air in the valley starts melting the ice and it falls off into either a lake or river. I learned this in elementary school more than 50 years ago. Those who believe it is caused by global warming have your head up your a**.

I am living where a huge glacier once was. It is called GEORGIA. Glaciers have been melting for THOUSANDS of years.

And just think, in the 70's they were worried about Global Cooling after a 30 year cooling period. Time magazine and every TVnews / newspaper in the country talked a the coming Ice Age.

Hasn't anyone heard of glaciers CALVING?

If there are substantial winter snowfalls further up the glacier, it thickens at the ends, and pieces drop off. A natural phenomenon.

People who blame this on global warming are being intellectually lazy, and probably should not be allowed out without a minder.

I have mixed feeling about this clip. Sure it's nice but it's a deffinite sign of what coming and it'll get worse even if this is a yearly event.
