I can't believe you found the Crispy Critters commercial! I've had that song stuck in my head since the 80's! (Maybe now I can finally exorcise it from my brain...)
C3POs are the best! I remember them, they were yumm, I would have loved Strawberry shortcake cereal, but a lot of these were US only so that was why the trips to the grocery stores there were so much fun (we are in Canada about 30 mins from border)
RE: #3 Post Crispy Critters This isn't a great cereal because of the pseudo-Jimmy Durante spokscreature. It's because they are "the-one-and-only-cereal-that-comes-in-the-shape-of-amimals!
Where's the love for the Smurf Berry Crunch commercial? After all, "Smurf Berry Crunch is fun to eat, a tasty fruity breakfast treat". Thanks for the GI Joe ad, I had completely forgotten about it.
I do not think these commercial were very good and there are much better ones....most of these are no longer on the market....if they were that good..the cereals would still be around......
I couldn't disagree more with this list. For starters, every single commercial except one is a non-cereal tie-in. Crispy Critters, yes, that's a classic.
I can't see how you can have a great cereal commercial from a lame cereal and 9/10 are lame.
What's amazing to me is that the "mikey" commercials were left out.
Elliot from CerealBlogger here. I agree that the PacMan commercial is pure genius. We have featured that one on our site, which is devoted entirely to our favorite topic...CEREAL. Click here for some of my favorite commercials. Keep up the good work, Neatorama!
These commercials make an interesting little time capsule, but there's not a single good or memorable one in the bunch. Many, in fact, were indicative of an 80's trend to create Saturday morning cartoon shows whose characters existed for no other purpose than to sell sugar-filled cereal to impressionable young viewers. As one who has seen a half century of cereal advertising, I can think of only three that made any sort of long-lasting impression on me. The first is the Life cereal commercial that we all know -- the one featuring Mikey. The second was a brilliant 60-second spot featuring Snap, Crackle and Pop singing individually and then singing staggered lyrics all at the same time. The words, "Geese cackle, feathers tickle, belts buckle, beets pickle, but Crackle makes the world go round" still echo in my mind some forty years later. The third, while not quite as brilliant, was no less memorable. It featured a gorgeous woman in a classy white one-piece bathing suit eating cereal on her patio, while a voice-over chimed, "and if you think Quaker cereal is just for babes ... it is!"
I remember these and they were cute, but the greatest of all time? The greatest cereal commercial of all time was the "Mikey" life cereal commercial. "He likes it! He really likes it!"
I agree with Jodie, lol...those were obviously chosen because they brought back memories of childhood! You couldn't possibly have a list of great cereal commercials without the classic Mikey Life commercial OR the Dancing Raisins Kelloggs Raisin Bran cereal commercial!!
Lets all start an email campaign and petition them to bring Smurf Berry Crunch cereal back. It was the #1 cereal of all time I am sure if enough people inquire vial email they would have to, right. Kraft is the parent company of Post cereal and they have a suggestion website to submit requests and ideas. http://www.kraftfoods.com/innovatewithkraft/default.aspx
The C3POs cereal, "Two O's fused as one!", was such utter stupidity when you look back at it. WTF did a 8 shape have to do with anything?
This isn't a great cereal because of the pseudo-Jimmy Durante spokscreature. It's because they are "the-one-and-only-cereal-that-comes-in-the-shape-of-amimals!
for something more...modern :-]
