What is It? Game 6.

This week's collaboration with What is it? blog is the photo above of this strange tool. Can you guess what it is?

For more guess the objects game, check out What is It? - no prize this week (still waiting to hear from my shirt screenprinters), so you're playing for bragging rights.

Update 1/11/07: It's a fire tong used to pick up hot coals. Closest guest is #1 withvous, who guessed a fireplace set. Congrats!

It looks as though you would squeeze it closed, insert it into something, then open and pull to exert traction, either moving the thing you inserted it into or removing something that was stuck inside. There--do I win?!

It's an old surgical tool for removing haemmeroids. The jagged portion was inserted in the 'backside' then a rope was attached to the hook. The other end of the rope was attached to a horse which was then startled causing it to gallop away. When the slack was taken up, the entire sphincter was ripped free thus ensuring that the haemmeroids would not return. The procedure, while having a 100 percent effectiveness rating, did not have many survivors.

This is actually a fire tongs, used to pick up hot coals. From the looks of it, it's probably industrial use (not just fireplace) but I suppose comment #1 withvous is the closest. :)
