The Mythbusters have actually tried this on two separate occasions, I think they were successful after like sixty tries using very controlled conditions during the second pass.

Um, this wasn't really splitting an arrow. He shot an arrow into the hollow core of a more modern aluminum shaft that was most likely put there by hand. Seeing as how the nock was absent, it couldn't have been fired from a bow. As for the Mythbusters, that's what gave them problems, the nock. The "Myth" was ultimately busted. Either way, that guy is an amazing shot.

Maybe not aluminum as it flexed a lot. Maybe carbon fiber, or fiberglass...

the splitting arrow myth originated in england and it is possible to do as long as the arrows that were shot were a poor archers arrows who wouldn't have a nock and likely be made from young tree branches

I'm not that great an archer and I've personally gotten robin hoods twice with carbon fiber shafts and nocks in place. I only ever shoot four arrows at a time. It's not that hard, just lucky (and a pain in the butt...arrows aren't cheap).

I did it to my dad one time. No one thought it could be done. But I had seen it done before.
