See that big black blob in the water? That’s not an oil slick -it’s a school of fish! Still, when a swimmer gets close to them, it looks like a drop of dishwashing liquid in greasy water as the fish try to avoid a potential predator. These are anchovies, the dreaded pizza topping. I hear they don’t smell nearly as nasty when they’re alive.

When the massive school showed up at Scripps Pier in San Diego, Scripps Oceanography Institute sent graduate students Julia Fiedler, Sean Crosby, and Bonnie Ludka out get it on video. Scientists at the institute say they haven’t seen such a school in at least 30 years. Look closely, and you’ll see a leopard shark or two swimming along with the students.  -via Viral Viral Videos
