The truck doesn't lack brakes. They are probably air operated, and as long as there isn't a significant air leak and the air tank is full, the brakes can be released for quite a long time, and then quickly activated whenever needed. If they run out of air, that truck isn't going anywhere. The brakes will lock down and will not release until the engine is started or an auxiliary air source is found.

it's a diesel so you have to prime the injectors which requires starting fluid. and the tracks would have torn up the road.
