It's basically a population density graph. It doesn't indicate that the Eastern States eat more McDonalds. The cities are closer together which is why the dots get denser. The Great Plains and Rocky Mountain Regions are sparsely populated; Denver and Salt Lake City are the only dense areas in these regions. Again, it's just population density, not an indication of calorie consumption.

I agree with Matt. We have three McD's here in the college town where I live. One located in Wal-Mart. This county is much smaller than my hometown county which has only about half the population and only one McD's at least 30 miles from any other. As a side note another location did not have a McD's until the 21st Century when it was likely determined that the traffic flow was enough to support a profit.

Quite right - a map of population per McDeadthings branch would be more informative.

Its nice to know one doesn't have to travel far if one gets a late night craving.

I see they left out Alaska. Makes sense, as it would be all black with just a few small dots.

Up till about 9 years ago we had to go around 30 miles for the nearest McDonalds.

There are three McDonalds in my tiny little town. Population does not account for that. See, two are at the interstate exits and the third (the oldest) is where the locals go.
