George Lailey was the last traditional bowl turner in Britain. He died in 1958, taking his craft with him. Later, Robin Wood decided to revive the craft. It proved to be a challenge:
I imagined it would be quite straightforward. It actually took me about five years just to get the basics.
Today, he makes wooden bowls just like George Lailey did: using a pole lathe controlled with a foot treadle. When he needs a new iron tool, he makes it at his forge. Watch Wood at work and marvel.
