Street Sign Armor

Of course, prudent people are already prepared with full suits of armor in our bunkers, ready to wear. But those of you who are still sipping your lattes and going to book club meetings instead of getting ready for the impending collapse of civilization (hint: robots) should take notes from Ivan Owen. He'll show you how to improvise armor from everyday objects, from hubcaps to street signs.

The truck doesn't lack brakes. They are probably air operated, and as long as there isn't a significant air leak and the air tank is full, the brakes can be released for quite a long time, and then quickly activated whenever needed. If they run out of air, that truck isn't going anywhere. The brakes will lock down and will not release until the engine is started or an auxiliary air source is found.
