Promised Land

The illustration on the cover of the Thanksgiving issue of The New Yorker magazine shows the Pilgrims immigrating to their new homeland. It's called “Promised Land” by Christoph Niemann. Link

Clever.

I doubt anybody mistook the location for Massachusetts. I think the direction is meant to be ambiguous, but the meaning is probably a remidner that even though your ancestors came over on the Mayflower, at one point, they were immigrants, too.

Interesting... because the Saguaro cactus pictured is indigenous only to Arizona and parts of Mexico, the cover can be interpreted as Pilgrims leaving Mexico for Arizona? (or vice versa) Wonder which way the artist intended. ;)
