Fake English

(YouTube link)

The dialogue in this short film may sound like English, but it is mostly fake. Commenters who've taken English as a second language say this is what our language sounds like to those who don't yet understand it. It may sound to you like someone who is mocking English. I can tell you from experience that this is the kind of thing a native English speaker hears when her sense of hearing is going downhill. NSFW language -I think. -via The Daily What

If you're in a room of English speakers and someone a table away is speaking Dutch, this happens. The two languages have the same vowels, mostly, and Dutch elides most of its Germanic chewy consonants. The effect is of rhubarb-brouhaha Englishy noises, with not a word you can latch onto. In the background, you never notice.

That's pretty cool!

I once had a 5 or 6 year old Brazilian little girl fake-talk English to me... It was basically "ra ra ra ra ra ra" It was fascinating to find out what English sounded like to her!
