Not only is this super cool, it's homemade! Instructables user chr posted the entire process, with pictures. This project is entered into a contest where the rules were "Make something awesome". I think he did. Link -via The Daily What

This is an extremely cool toy, but the instructions for making it aren't for the faint of heart. You'd have to be a major electronics geek to pull this off.

That said, I'd love to see a giant one like the one Durango describes!

Something very similar to this has been appearing at Burning Man the last few years. It's called Cubitron and it's configuration has changed and evolved. It's a lot larger than this cool thing and the lights change colors. The lights are also encased in what appear to be ping pong balls, for a really nice effect. Look up Cubitron on youtube for some nice videos of it.
