Outdoor Fireplace for ... a Kindergarten Project?! Only in Norway ...

When architecture firm Haugen/Zohar Arkitekter was commissioned by the municipality of Trondheim, Norway, to build an outdoor project for a kindergarten, the company came up with this ... fireplace?!

Very cool, but not exactly the jungle gym I would've built for the kindergarteners: Link

Speaking as a Finn I'm amused by the people who think we need to "protect the children" thinking this is bad thing.

Obviously a space like this wouldn't have a fire lit unless there is adult supervision, and when you do light the fire the kids get a chance to learn how to act responsibly around a fire.

We should strive to empower children to do stuff instead of shielding them from everything conceivable. Protecting kids from real threats is different from teaching them how to manage risks.

Wibble! - ah, the august organ known in our family as The Bile Duct. The kids occasionally pick it up and my PiL's house and are frequently surprised by how little of it's actually true.
